Organic gardening is a way of life . It centers on the principle that there are ways to replenish soil that grow our plants in mucho buenos beneficial ways. Organic gardening brings life to the soil and all the life teaming throughout the soil. Soil is made up of all sorts of good stuff. Soil science is fascinating and the more you educate yourself on this subject, the better grower you will become. That’s the goal. Grow better plants. Healthy plants produce healthy nutritious healing veggies, fruits, flowers, medicinal-culinary-fragrant herbs and spices.
Healthy plants have been shown to withstand pests and disease far better than their chemically treated and fertilized specimen counterparts.
I have seen evidence and proof of this with my own eyes and experience growing food and medicine for my family and friends. It works and makes total sense when you think about it. Basic organic soil amendments are naturally obtained from organic sources. The list of organic soil conditioners and fertilizer soil foods such as, composts and compost tea, fish emulsion, bat guano, worm castings and tea, sea kelp, cottonseed hulls, coconut fibers, peat moss blood meal, bone meal, etc.
All these amendments can be obtained by a quick shopping experience at
Organics OKC 2800 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Oklahoma City, Okla. 73107
All the material I previously listed all have a N-P-K number. This relates to the Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium level each comprises of. For example Alaska fish emulsion has a number listed on the product container of 5-1-2 The nitrogen is the highest number. Fish emulsion would be good for vegetation growth, leaf growth with a little support of Phosphorus and Potassium for root development and for blooming or flower production. This could feed a variety of plants very well.
Different stages of the plants production direct you how to feed your plants. Feed them and yourself organically! It's easy!
Starting from seed your going to want to supply root development amendments such as compost tea or a product from BOTANICARE called Liquid Karma. Liquid Karma can actually be used in all stages of growth. It benefits by producing larger fruits, vegetables, flowers, produces higher yields, helps root healthy cuttings, increases metabolic rates in your plants and also provides transplant shock protection.
When seedlings grow up a little then your going to want to provide something for leafy growth. Select a product that has highest number in the Nitrogen number spot. NPK This will help your plant grow vigorous and leafy. This helps the plant get bigger, taller, beefed up!
When you are ready for your fruits and veggies to flower, jump up your P and K. This is the final stage of most plants-fruiting and floral display. Grab you a bloom boosting amendment. We can recommend all sorts of awesome choices for this at the shop. I, myself am partial to the BOTANICARE Pure Blend Pro series. It stinks but boy does it make my plants happy. If they could sing..they would be singing loud and proud!
Fragrance and essential oils can be encouraged with products that supply sugar/carbohydrates to the plants, Strapped, a molasses based product we carry that can help with this goal in your plants life. It helps the plant taste better. Flavor, fragrance and sweetness is enhanced with by using Strapped or a molasses based product at the fruiting and flowering stage. Roses love this stuff. All my fragrance gardens benefit from a weekly dose of this great stuff!
There are also products available that help with the soil microbial life. This helps the plant uptake all these yummy treats and nutrition much more efficiently and better. Beneficial bacteria are workhorses in the soil. Soil consists of all sorts of microscopic life forms that work together to maintain healthy soil life. There are many ways to improve soil life. Beneficial compost and worm casting teas, packaged beneficial microbes, red worm castings, red worms all can boost soil activity and life.
Container choices for outdoor and indoor growing have improved the life for many plants. SmartPot is a container product made in Oklahoma that boosts air circulation, drainage and air root pruning to counter the circling of roots in their potted homes. These are available at ORGANIC’S OKC, and outperform any container I have ever grown in. They are available in sizes of 1 gal to up to 30 gal or bigger in the case of the SmartPot Garden container. The pots can be reused & last a very long time. Mine have not worn out yet and they are outdoors with veggies, herbs, and fruit plants. SmartPot has a composter pot too that I'm dying to try out. :)
Seed stock. Know your seed stock supplier. Good genetics produce great plants. Always buy open pollinated seed. Heirlooms are a fun open pollinated group of plants that have been in gardens for generations. Seed can be saved from both open pollinated and heirloom variety plants. Organic's OKC has a wide variety of earth friendly heirloom and open pollinated plants. Herbs, veggies, flowers, pollinator garden seeds, medicinal herb seeds. All Janine and Mark's seed at Organic's OKC are carefully selected for our region and growing conditions.
