How did I end up here? Of all the things I write, it seems quite strange to end up writing for a bunch of Divas :) It’s a long time since I first heard the word ‘diva’. And when it was explained to me it was in a very negative context. A famous pop star had come to do a concert here in Ireland and was complaining about her hotel service. She was looking for some of the creature comforts of home which Ireland couldn’t give her. She was labelled a ‘Diva’ an immediately it became a negative word. “Oh her...? she’s a right Diva she is...!”
Dictionary .com gives the definition of Diva as: a distinguished female singer; prima donna. The origin of the word dates back to the 1800s. It is an Italian word, the feminine of the word – dīvus, meaning god.
Somewhere along the way, this word for an artist at the top of her profession – almost godlike in her talent, was hijacked to represent superstar tantrums and unreasonable demands! I don’t think it was ever meant to mean that. A diva may be hard to deal with, but that’s not what makes her a diva! I haven’t known Dede Watson - our chief Diva - very long, but what I do know of her, I love. Hard working, driven, encouraging and when it comes to Social Media – certainly at the top of her profession.
I’m proud to join Diva Cafe and love that we can reclaim the word and give it back its true definition. You’ll see me pop up here every so often sharing my thoughts on everything - family, faith, fat and facial hair! There’s very little I don’t have some opinion on or some nonsense to share about. And I look forward to getting to know some of you Divas.
In the mean time if you could show me to my private dressing room, I’d like some COLD water, 6 dozen white roses and a large bag of Hershey’s kisses.... NOW!!!
I could get used to this Diva thing you know....! ;)
