Postpartum exercise: Is your body ready?

How soon after childbirth should you begin exercising?

When to start an exercise program after delivery will depend on several factors: Whether you had a vaginal or c-section as well as if you had been on a regular fitness program prior to giving birth.

If you were exercising prior to the delivery and had a vaginal birth, then you can normally resume your pregnancy workout or light walking within days afterward. After your first postpartum week, a slow to moderate 30-minute walk three times a week should be fine. You can increase the length and intensity as you begin to gain strength.

If you had a c-section, expect to wait at least 6-8 weeks before beginning an exercise program. Normally, the doctor will give you the go ahead after your 6 week check up. One of the best ways to shed those excess pounds by stimulating the cardiovascular system is to do a fast paced walk with the stroller.

Don't be too eager to get back into shape. Listen to your body as well as the advice of your doctor.
