I have had my HE washer for almost 10 years and I have used regular laundry detergent and Eco friendly laundry detergents.  My washing machine has never seized up from using those products.  You just have to use less of those products if you don't purchase HE detergent.

NO Dede!  It doesn't!  The home made detergents are perfectly safe.  We actually use less chemicals than the brands on the market.  It is only Soap, washinf soda and Borax, mixed with water until it becomes the consistency of liquid laundry detergent.  I have an HE too and it works just fine with my washer. I don't know why they tell you to use HE detergent.  If you purchase regular laundry detergent you only have to use about 2 tablespoons because your washer uses less water than a standard washing machine.

That is amazing Kari! We have a new washer though and  you have to special detergent with "He" . It makes doing laundry a bit more expensive:(

Today I made home made dishwasher detergent. Everything came out squeeky clean!Cost .81 cents to make 20 oz. I will never again buy store brand detergent!!! In a plastic container mix together 1 cup Borax, 1 cup Baking Soda, 1/2 cup Kosher Salt. Shake. Pour 1/4 cup into dispenser. If dishes are extra greasy then put another 1/4 cup in the other dispenser.

I used a quarter cup...but I think I could have gotten away with using 3 or 4 tablespoons. Just experiment with the amount. It will probably depend on your dishwasher and how hot your water is. I used Normal Cycle. Will try energy miser... next time and see if I get the same results. Sam's Club sells 5 lb. bags of Baking Soda for about $6.00. Paid $3.99 for the Borax at Walmart today. I think I got the big box of Kosher Salt at Sam's Club too and it was relatively cheap. The yield and savings you are going to get from your small investment is enormous!

All great tips FIbbit!! I especially like the idea of hunting for furniture at thrift shops AFTER the holidays. So many people get new furniture for Christmas and are eager to donate their old furniture to local charities. I will keep this in mind!
