Get Revved Up

Do you know what could be completely and totally wild? Um…no not Vegas…Well, yeah ok but I’m thinking radio blasting, wind in the face and open road. Lots of it! Have ya figured it out yet? Here’s another direct hint: Grab your girlfriends - Get in the car and drive! A road trip can be so much fun and wonderful for releasing stress. That’s because you feel so free and unrestricted. Hey, Oprah and Gail did it.

The best part is – it doesn’t matter what time of year it is; cold, hot, icy, wet, whatever. It’s all a part of the adventure. Not convinced? You gotta wrap your mind around it, especially if you’re not one for traveling much.

Let’s say we want to drive south. You might like the idea of getting warm if you’re experiencing a bit of cold weather. Then you’ll wanna check out the Sunshine State. Florida has a lot to offer when it comes to the scenic route. Oh, we’re talking orange groves for days…And water! If you love seeing lakes sparkle from the rays of the sun, you’ll absolutely love adding to your photo collection during this trip. All though Florida does get cold, it’s rather sporadic. This is actually a good thing. Even if it’s wintery when you come through you’re almost guaranteed to get some hiking or fishing done. There’s excellent birding spots too as well as alligator sightings.

Make it Wild: Go skinny dipping – At Your Own Risk. If you purchase a roadmap from any tourist booth they are very accurate about which waters are safe and free from alligators. Believe it or not there are safe places to go skinny dipping and it’s totally allowed. Seasoned “dippers” call them Swimming Holes. Visit swimmingholes.org and click on the state of Florida to find the best spots to dip.

Next Stop…let’s visit Oregon. Oooo I’m such a sucker for the Wild, Wild West and you will be too if you ever visit the lush hills and majestic rivers of this “home sweet home” atmosphere. Because of its historic nature, Oregon offers many touristic attractions. You’ll absolutely love driving there. It’s beautiful and you’ll know when you’re getting closer. When you arrive the experiences seem endless.

You could check out the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center which features live demonstrations and educates you on the area’s history and the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area offers horseback riding, hiking and much more. What else…oh there’s so much to do but you simply must check out a museum or two. The Pine Valley Museum is perfect if hubby insist on coming along. They feature a collection of historic mining equipment, farming tools and a blacksmith shop. It may seem like “guy” stuff but you’ll love it.

Make it Wild: Put on your boots and throw on a cowboy hat. Wrap up your trip by heading to Duke’s on the way out and hopping on the mechanical bull. Oh yes in deedy, the crowd is safe but rowdy! If you want proper & prim this isn’t the joint for you but if you like a little loud music, coyote style bar dancing and UFC game watching every now and then…well yeah, you’ll love getting wild at Duke’s. It’s like the modern version of an old western tavern. Live music including karaoke, free line dancing lessons, mouth watering food – ribs, steaks, you name it and of course Happy Hour! Visit dukesbar.com to check ‘em out.

Okay I know I didn’t name all of your favorite destinations but Oh wow! There are so many places to go. However, before you rev that engine, here are a few safety tips ladies:

*Always let your family and friends know each and everyone of your destinations. Don’t worry- what happens there – can stay there (wink) but it’s always wise to at least let your loved ones know where you’re going.

*Also keep your cell charged. If you don’t have a car charger, now is a good time to invest in one. You seriously don’t want to be stranded in unfamiliar territory without a phone – enough said.

*Always remember to stick to your directions. If you’ve been responsible enough to map out an easy and safe route, stick to it!

*Fuel up. Don’t get lazy or tell yourself you’ll stop for gas later. Once your tank gets lower than half, pay attention - within the next hour or so you’ll need to be planning your next stop.

*And last but not least; obey the rules you were taught in kindergarten. Of course you’re adults now but you still shouldn’t go off with strangers. Use common sense. No matter how much fun you’re having, be aware of your surroundings. Got it? Good.

Okay…REV those engines…Ready, Set…Go!!

Good tips.  We had two separate trips from DFW to Kentucky a couple of years back where our vehicle d-i-e-d in Arkansas.  Having a charged cell phone was a lifesaver!

I love road trips and hope to take a few this year. After my 3 day move from Florida to Texas last year, I needed a break from the road, but ready to start up again!!
