In many studies, it has been found that people who have good prenatal care have a much better chance of having a healthy baby. This is not to say that good prenatal care will always lead to healthy babies, but it will go a long way in increasing the chances.

The first thing that everyone says is to take prenatal vitamins. Some people are unable to take them. The best thing to do in this situation is to try several brands. No two brands are alike. Eating with the vitamins can also allay any issues caused to the stomach. the best solution is to take the vitamins prior to going to bed. This way, any minor side effects will not be felt while asleep.

Seeing an OB/GYN physician or midwife regularly will ensure the pregnancy is progressing as expected. Throughout the pregnancy, certain tests are beneficial to the both the mother and fetus. Blood pressure is checked regularly to ensure that Preeclampsia does not occur. That is condition marked by high pressure and excess protein in your urine. It can be fatal if left untreated.

One of the other benefits of seeing a physician or midwife also means seeing the progress of the fetus growth via ultrasounds. This will show how the baby is developing as well as seeing if there are any potential growth issues. On the ultrasound it also shows the progress of the placenta. The placenta is the organ that delivers oxygen and nutrients to the fetus. Spina Bifida is also a disease that can be determined via ultrasound. It is during one of the first ultrasounds that the practitioner looks to ensure that this issue has not occurred. While many of the things in this article are scary, most of them are just preventative measures to monitor the progress of both the mother and the fetus.

Blood work is also done to determine blood type, Rh factor, a specific protein on the surface of the red blood cells, any previous exposure to contagious diseases, and later in the pregnancy blood work determines possible low iron levels, gestational diabetes, and Group B strep. All of these are for both the mother and the fetus to ensure proper treatment. There is an optional test know as an amniocenteses, this is where parents can check for the potential for birth defects. This test is not required and should be evaluated thoroughly. There are pros and cons to doing so that may be discussed with your practitioner.
The non clinical prenatal care is very important as well.

Excessive drinking of alcohol can cause a plethora of problems. Smoking should not be done as this also can be an issue in the progression of the pregnancy. Illegal drugs are extremely dangerous to the fetus. Eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly can help your body prepare for the impending birth. Sleep is very important to the mother at this time.

Avoid stress whenever possible. One of the many things your practitioner is there for is questions. Many parents have many questions and it is usually recommended that it they are written down. They can be presented at your next visit. Classes are usually held through the medical center, practitioner's office or even the local hospital.

Prenatal care is very important in the development of the fetus and will pay off in the long run. Knowing the health of both the fetus and the mother will ensure the best chance for a healthy baby.
