My Menopausal Journey

In June 2001, I had a hysterectomy after years of pain and heavy bleeding, which had advanced to the most intolerable state. If I knew what I am learning about bioidentical hormones now, I probably could have avoided the surgery.

I had my uterus and cervix removed, keeping my ovaries. I was told that would prevent early menopause. This was not what happened for me. Very shortly after the surgery, I began with hot flashes which progressed to severe symptoms that put me on a path of needless test and misinformation.

I spent almost a year not knowing that I was in menopause only to be sent to a blood specialist and denied a hormonal test because my family doctor told me the test cost the insurance company money!

After feeling that I might have MS, Cancer and a host of other diseases, I finally found information that provided me some real insight into what might be troubling me. I went back to a Obgyn who told me she felt I really was in menopause. The test results confirmed this and I started on hormones that gave me back my life.

Estratest for me was a life saver. If you have suffered from significant and severe menopausal symptoms, then you know how completely debilitating that it can be. . The problem I face now is that the manufacturer discontinued Estratest last fall and once again, my health slowly declined and in the past few months, I have become very sick. I am currently on Xanax to relieve some of the anxiety, but this is just a bandaid, not a cure!! Syntest, which is the generic form if Estratest, did not work for me.

After reaching a place that was intolerable, I called my Gyn and he is now treating me with bioidentical hormones. They do not make mine anymore and I have no alternative. From what I am reading, they are the only hormones that a woman should take.

I will be doing more research and chronicling my own journey here. My hope is that this will save many of you years of agony and illness. Menopause does not have to be a painful process. Let's empower ourselves to learn more about our bodies and take control of our health!
