Women's Networking and Social Community
I was part of an author's event today at a small library about two hours away from where I live. I like doing these events because I always meet interesting people-and today was no exception. The library reminded me of one of those neighborhood schools of yesterday. It had such character. The minute I opened the door the smell I love hit me. Books-printed matter all gathered in one space has a certain scent and this community library was no exception. We authors were asked to give a small presentation; then cookies would be served and patrons could meet the authors and buy their books.
Seniors dominated the audience so I geared my 15-20 minutes to my adult Christmas story-"The Reindeer Keeper"-talking about how the idea stemmed back to when I was a child growing up in the country. I told them about the old chicken coop my grandparents gutted and then filled with the remains of an abandoned one-room schoolhouse; telling them that was where my cousins and I would spend every minute we could and a main part of our time was spent reading. I mentioned my favorite authors had included Louisa May Alcott and Laura Ingalls Wilder.
Later in the day a woman with a 9-year old daughter stopped where I was sitting with my books. The little girl wanted to tell me she too loved and read all the Laura Ingalls Wilder books so we discussed a few of them; shared what we liked about them. And then that 9-year old told me about some books by that author's daughter that I had not heard of before. The young critic told me I should read them. She thought I'd like them even if I wasn't in my chicken coop.
Good writing does transcend generations.

It was the first time I'd been out in the public with my Christmas story, "The Reindeer Keeper" and was overwhelmed by the response! More such events to come as Christmas sneaks closer.
