Also, we need to know who our customers are and be sure we are marketing to them. For example, if the customer you want to reach is in her sixties, works outside the home, and likes to travel, you would want to think twice about trying to reach her by advertising on a site for new mothers.
Also, it's a good idea to set up some way to track how many customers each piece of advertising actually pulls in. It may seem easy to keep it all in your head at first, but what if your business really takes off? If you end up with tons of customers from all different sources, you'll thank yourself for having a tracking system in place from the very beginning.

I find business owners that have personal branding and websites get more of my attention then the ones who just use the company provided one! It sets you apart from the other 30 thousand people selling the same or similar product.
Great free advertising places might be....
Leaving your card with your tip
taking free samples of your product to networking meetings or local businesses
bulletin boards in the bookstore, coffee shop or reasturants
Online Online Online!
The best I find is from word of mouth - nothing says try it like someone other then the owner promoting you! Which is what my company WINN is all about - connecting women, forming relationships and promoting each other!
