Cranial Sacral Therapy

Life expresses itself as motion. At a deep level of our physiological functioning all healthy, living tissues subtly "breathe" with the motion of life - a phenomenon that produces rhythmic impulses which can be palpated by sensitive hands. The presence of these subtle rhythms in the body was discovered by osteopath Dr William Sutherland over 100 years ago, after he had a remarkable insight while examining the specialized articulations of cranial bones. Contrary to popular belief Dr Sutherland realized that cranial sutures were, in fact, designed to express small degrees of motion. He undertook many years of research during which he demonstrated the existence of this motion and eventually concluded it is essentially produced by the body's inherent life force, which he referred to as the "Breath of Life." Furthermore, Dr Sutherland discovered that the motion of cranial bones he first discovered is closely connected to subtle movements that involve a network of interrelated tissues and fluids at the core of the body; including cerebrospinal fluid (the 'sap in the tree'), the central nervous system, the membranes that surround the central nervous system and the sacrum.

Cranial sacral therapy is the subtle massage and manipulation of the cranial bones and spine to encourage the body to return to natural cranial rhythms. Therapists, physicians, chiropractors and even dentists report that the treatment has a positive effect on illnesses as wide ranging as hip injury and personality disorders.

What are the benefits of CranioSacral Therapy?

CranioSacral is profoundly relaxing. Most people tend to drift off during the experience, which is good, because the body simply works better relaxed than it does stressed out. As CranioSacral Pracitioners, we tune into your body to assist in the healing process. We use cranio sacral and it's gentle, soft, safe touch to encourage people to let go of any stress and tension. Our sole focus is on the deep relaxation that CranioSacral Therapy has to offer. And it usually takes time and often a few sessions for people to truly let go of that stress. In fact, we spend well over an hour with each person to help achieve whole body relaxation. Because, ultimately it's the relaxation effect that has the numerous benefits on a person's health and well-being and that's what makes CranioSacral so unique, worthwhile and so enjoyable. Please note, if you do have any specific conditions

What can I expect from a session of CranioSacral?

As a client, you'll lie face up on a soft, comfortable massage table fully dressed in loose comfortable clothing. The therapist will educate you and guide you through the session. Sessions usually last about an hour or longer. The touch is often times no more than the weight of a nickel. And more than likely, you'll just drift off into a nice, pleasant, relaxing, dreamy place. Many people experience such a deep sense of relaxation that they don't want to get off the table when they're done. For many people they haven't allowed themselves to be that relaxed in a long time. In fact we think, they've forgotten what it feels like to be relaxed. They've gotten so used to being and functioning in a stressed state. CranioSacral can help us remember what true relaxation feels like and the positive effects on our bodies relaxation has. Craniosacral is a very light safe touch, but very powerful. It's different from any other form of bodywork because we believe that we can get deeper results by going lighter. We follow the timeless wisdom of your body and allow your body to guide us to what your body needs in order to heal itself. We don't use force, rather just the opposite. The light touch is deeply soothing and relaxing. It feels like a reset button for your nervous system. Many clients take naps after the sessions, while others seem to be energized and get alot of stuff done. We recommend people allow 24 - 48 hours for the work to integrate. And not to plan anything too strenuous immediately following a session and allow it to really sink in. The following day, people can feel anywhere from irritable to elated. Aches and pains might begin to shift. These are all signs of your body responding to the therapy.
