So, spring is just a couple of weeks away.  Time to start planning those gardens and flower beds.

Anyone ever gardened in Zone 3 & 4? (new england cold zones)
We are buying a house, but don't move in until after December. My mother in law bought be about a million 75% off tulip bulbs... But you are supposed to plant them, like NOW. But we wont be able to do anything to the property until we close. SO. my options? I was thinking this: either, I can store those bulb babies in the fridge until spring, plant them, and hope that i tricked them about there dormant season. OR store them in the basement, and just plant them in the spring.. i.e. without any trickery. Any thoughts on this???

Hi Bonnie! Welcome back. Hope you're recouping well after your surgery.

As for my post about the rabbits eating my lillies, I've been using "Rabbit Stopper", which can be found in most nurseries (I hope). It is all natural & smells like peppermint. It seems to be working. I just reapply every 2-3 weeks.

Hi all... sorry I've been gone for so long. I had some surgery some weeks ago and just now returning to things I've been neglecting.
I hope everyone's gardens are doing well. Here are a few suggestions to keep your water consumption down during the hot weather. Catch the rainwater from storms in barrels or old buckets set underneath your gutter spouts. Attach a multi-function nozzle on the hose so you can direct the speed and amount of water on just the plants you want to water instead of watering dry, empty soil.
Water early in the morning before the hot sun comes up. Compost and mulch your plants to hold in the moisture and to slow down evaporation so you won't have to water as often. Use a timer on any automatic sprinkler system to set predetermined watering sessions.

Spring is here! Time to start those gardens and flower beds. Looking forward to hearing some new tips and advice for planting my veggies & flowers (hopefully we'll have a better season in Colorado for that).

Also, does anyone have any tips for keeping the rabbits from eating all my lillies? I've heard that they don't like merigolds. Will that keep them out? We've tried Rabbit Away before, but it stinks really bad. Looking for something natural that doesn't stink. Thank you.

It's been a while since I've signed on. Happy New Year to everyone.
My christmas cactus is blooming all over with tiny buds on the end of each new growth. Try letting your cactus dry out somewhat and maybe you might get some buds or flowers on them. Plants get scared when you don't water them as often and so they send out blossoms to keep themselves going. Let them dry out a bit and see what happens.
