Permalink Reply by Lacy Norman on January 29, 2010 at 1:26am I agree with your views on Belly Dance. It is a much more feminine and beautiful way of moving the body, than most other popular dance/workout styles. I think it's popularity has grown quite a bit in the last 5 years that I've been dancing. Most of the women I've known who have tried it have loved it, I think it's getting past that "first step" of actually giving it a go that many women struggle with. Maybe the solution is to do more free demos or community classes that are affordable in order to increase the exposure of this art form...?
I also wonder if it's reputation as a Performance style of dance (theater, restaurants, the touring superstars) has helped it's popularity grow while also intimidating some would-be-dancers?
What many people do not realize is that it is a Low Impact workout, as you pointed out, that it can be done safely during pregnancy. Low impact does *not* mean less of a workout, it means you don't stress your joints as much! You don't have to pound the pavement or floor with big leaps and bounds to burn calories, you just have to move :) and move you *must* when those intoxicating arabic beats start to play ;)
I mean, seriously? have you ever tried to not dance or sway to Belly Dance Music?
I'd love to hear your replies!

Well considering poll dancing has gained such popularity, I would imagine that the perception of belly dancing is not what it used to be. I think that it is a beautiful form of dancing too.
