I would like to know why people in general consider Belly Dance a lower form of dance?
Why are ladies in general afraid to move naturally?
I am very puzzled.
Belly dance has been around for hundreds of years and has been applied as an acient form of Lamaze for pregnant ladies about to give birth to ease the contractions.
I belly danced my way through my pregnancies and although I was looked upon as a little off, I did it naturally and musically.
I doubt very much that Jazzercise or Hip-Hop, or Pole dancing could have helped at the time.
I need honest feedback ladies, please. Why is Belly Dance less popular or practiced in today's times?

I don't have that negative impression about Belly Dancing. I think it is beautiful and is so great for toning the belly!! My aunt took belly dancing 30 years ago! She loved it.
Thank you for your reply Dede. You are an excception and so is your aunt. I took belly dance 40 years ago and never stopped. That is the secret to a long and happy life. As women, we forget how to move, we forget who we are. We become what society tells us we are. Beasts of burden. Mothers. wives, workers, care takers, sexual objects and so on. We forget the Goddess in us all. We forget to undulate, we drop the core and it grows a hard shell. Because of belly dancing my way through life, I weigh only 5 lb more than when I got married 35 years ago and having kids. Mu daughter lost 40 lb after gaining a lot when she was a pre-teen, due to her refusal to dance as mom did. Now, she's a brilliant dancer, makes costumes and has lost weight. Looks like a siren and feels like a Goddess! She swears she'll never stop dancing.
I've been trying to get ladies to belly dance forever, but I hit the wall every time. Why is that?
Im not perfect at it ... but I sure LOVE belly dancing!! We have several locations with classes and one troupe who allows anyone to show up for fun... at no cost - I chip in a little anyway haha!! I love watching proffessionals - very awesome!
no one looks down on it here - its very popular. they teach it at the hot yoga studio where i go.
I agree with your views on Belly Dance. It is a much more feminine and beautiful way of moving the body, than most other popular dance/workout styles. I think it's popularity has grown quite a bit in the last 5 years that I've been dancing. Most of the women I've known who have tried it have loved it, I think it's getting past that "first step" of actually giving it a go that many women struggle with. Maybe the solution is to do more free demos or community classes that are affordable in order to increase the exposure of this art form...?
I also wonder if it's reputation as a Performance style of dance (theater, restaurants, the touring superstars) has helped it's popularity grow while also intimidating some would-be-dancers?

What many people do not realize is that it is a Low Impact workout, as you pointed out, that it can be done safely during pregnancy. Low impact does *not* mean less of a workout, it means you don't stress your joints as much! You don't have to pound the pavement or floor with big leaps and bounds to burn calories, you just have to move :) and move you *must* when those intoxicating arabic beats start to play ;)
I mean, seriously? have you ever tried to not dance or sway to Belly Dance Music?

I'd love to hear your replies!

Well considering poll dancing has gained such popularity, I would imagine that the perception of belly dancing is not what it used to be. I think that it is a beautiful form of dancing too.
